Catriona Hegarty
Hegarty associates herself most with the technique and style of abstract expressionism. Her style exploits the use of color through thoughtful curation of palette and methodical paint application. Hegarty views painting as an exercise that requires the whole body and mind. Movements and mark making that happen naturally through daily life help inspire the way in which the paint meets the canvas. This mindset leads to both expressive mark making and pieces tightly connected to their maker.
Hegarty's work is concentrated on color and the natural eb and flow of paint across a surface. Manipulating these variables evoke emotion and memory on canvas. She aims for the viewer to connect the piece to a time other than the present, hoping to spark internal retrospection.
In recent works, Hegarty has honed her work in with the self set challenge to work in limited color palettes. This paired with the use of geometric shapes are still an act of abstract expression, but focus more on concrete symbols and forms. The works show a dichotomy when it comes to skill set and style, but are linked together with the passion behind their creation.
Common sources of inspiration come from nature, interpersonal relationships, personal conversations and deep reflective thinking on both daily life and the process of making.
